Mobile Phones: Waste of Time and Money or a Need?

BBC Urdu has prepared a special report on use of cell phones in Pakistan. It discusses how cell phones penetrated into local market, and why people buy expensive cell phones while basic telephony is possible with very inexpensive handsets.
It also discusses that voice and SMS packages are wastage of time, as necessary communication can be concluded with-in minutes – then why do people talk for hours with no particular agenda in hands?

How NOT to Buy a Fake Phone?

How many times is it that you buy a product and it turns out that product was fake one (or a Chinese version of the original) or maybe it was a used unit?
Well it happened with my friend thrice and another time to me. Unfortunately it is becoming a common practice these days, especially in a country like Pakistan where lot of products are not officially sold by manufacturers themselves.

Experience teaches a man a lot and it did teach me several things, which I am sharing with you:
1. See reviews and pictures of the product online. Believe me this is really helpful especially in case of devices like iPhone 4S (as there is almost no difference in the design of 4S and its predecessor iPhone 4).
2. See the back of the device and logo carefully. The placement of LED Flash and ports on the side of device carefully. Their location might be changed. But the most important thing is the logo. In most cases, it might be cleverly written to like look the original. But upon careful inspection, differences might appear. Instead of NOKIA, it might be NOKTA or N0KIA (N ZERO OKIA) or APPlE instead of APPLE.
3. And here comes a very weak spot, the camera. The camera of these cheap devices take very blurred pictures and they does look cloudy. The videos too are nothing short of portable earthquakes. The icons of the camera interface might be changed too.
4. Check the OS carefully. It might not be so smooth as your dream phone. You might’ve known that upon pressing the home button in iPhone, icons seem to flow back to the screen. This little animation and other things might not happen in fake phones.
5. Memorize the specs carefully. No, not all. But do check whether the device you’re buying is dual-sim/micro-SD card/micro-sim card supported. Ask the shopkeeper about these specs. This really can help you.
6. Don’t be shy. If you’re buying a device worth thousands, you’ve every right to ask ANY question from the retailer. Also notice the face of the retailer upon asking the originality of the device.
7. Check the device for any physical damage. A lot of shopkeepers do sell used devices after replacing physically damaged parts.
8. Check the retail box. Check the charger. Check whether the box really looks like the retail box of original phone.
9. Take a look at the pre-installed applications. Are they the same? Do they have the same interface? A lot of fake phones have applications that have similar logos like the original ones but they aren’t completely same.
10. Browse the web. No it does sound awkward but it will help. Iphone, Android, WP7 and Meego have brilliant browsers. Fake ones might not be so smooth. And then shock the retailer by accessing the online software store. Its not THAT helpful but if your device is a fake one, it may not be able to access the store.
These all may require you to do a bit of a research of the device you’re about to buy on the web. But the hard work always pays off and you will get the thing you deserve. Best of luck!

Tips on Buying Your First Smartphone

Its always a great moment when you’re buying your first phone and even bigger when you are buying your first smartphone.
Some people make this decision easily (and happily) but others aren’t so lucky and after the purchase they realize that they chose the wrong path.

If you are one of those then you MUST keep following points in mind before buying your first phone:
1. Keep the OS in mind. If you want to go through the ‘old way’ then symbian is for you. iOS is still the most smooth OS however, Android is not far behind either and considering the fact that Android phones offer even more features and are considerably cheaper, the decision really depends on you.
2. Keep the design and company in mind. A lot of people love Nokia’s design and even their Symbian OS. A lot of people want to have a phone with a good build quality. If you are that 2nd kind of person, you should stay away from Samsung and their plastic build quality. Maybe, HTC will suit your needs a little. iPhone and a lot of Nokia phones (like the N8, N9, Lumia 800) offer outstanding build qualities.
3. DON’T FORGET THE APPLICATIONS! Applications are one of the biggest reasons people buy smartphones. iPhone OS (iOS) currently offers the most applications on any mobile platform but Android isn’t very far behind either. And don’t forget, Android offers a large number of free applications (including Angry Birds). The Application library of Windows Phone 7 is growing too. If you don’t want apps, then Palm OS and Symbian will fare you well too.
4. The screen. Make sure you know the size of screen you want. Currently most people like 3.5 and 4 inch screens. Also don’t forget about the pixel density. iPhone and Samsung Galaxy Nexus are the phones that currently offer the most pixel densities (some others have the same resolution as well but they are not so common). If you want, you can make the screen size even bigger, to 5 or even 7 inches through Samsung Galaxy Note and Samsung Galaxy Tab.
5. The camera. A lot of people (including me) left their cameras on getting their first camera-phone. If you want a phone for taking snaps, then it must have at least 5mp camera and HD video too if you make videos as well. Its recommended that the camera should be autofocus too. Phones such as Nokia 603 are not only cheap but also have good cameras (but without autofocus).
6. The processor and RAM. Every good Android phone must have at least 1 Ghz processor with at least 512 Mb RAM to run smoothly. Windows Phone 7 and iOS don’t have these limitations as they run smoothly due to Microsoft’s and Apple’s restrictions. Take a phone with better processor and RAM if you want it to be the fastest in the crowd (i.e works faster than other phones).
7. Memory and Sim card. Keep in mind how much memory you’ll need on your phone as a lot of manufacturers produce several versions of their phones which have different amounts of memory (e.g iPhone comes in 16, 32 and 64Gb models). And don’t forget about sim card slot. In Pakistan, there are only a few people who know about micro-sims which work with some phones, such as iPhones. A micro-sim is a sim card which is quite smaller than the traditional sim cards available. So to make it work on your phone, you’ll have to cut it.
8. The color. Believe me, the color of your phone reflects your personality! For example, if you are a guy with a pink Nokia N8, you know what people will think about you… Make this decision carefully.
9. Battery Life. There are some dual-core phones with extremely high-end specs and completely poor battery life. It might not seem a big deal but your phone is nothing more than curved, beautiful brick without good battery life. There are some phones such as Motorola Droid Razr that come with a huge 3300mAH battery which are ideal for you if you use your phone a lot.
10. Most important, the budget. If you’re on a tight budget, then you might have to make some sacrifices. Symbian phones might help here as a lot of Symbian devices come quite cheaper than the ones with Android OS. If you don’t know, let me tell you, it is not recommended to buy an Android phone with weak processor and less RAM because Android is a processor-consuming OS and Android devices do grow a bit slower with time. However, if you have an unlimited budget, then there aren’t any boundaries.

Internet Explorer 9 for a More Beautiful Web

The New Year greeted Microsoft with the good news that Internet Explorer is gaining ground as the browser of choice on Windows 7. With hardware accelerated video amongst other features, websites perform like installed programs on your computer. IE9 deals with HD video with ease and presents websites the way they were designed to be viewed and makes them responsive like never before.
Uptil now Chrome held the honors for giving the most space to the webpage but IE9 knocks it off its perch with its top window frame taking 63 pixels compared to Chrome’s 89. The new compact window header still includes the clipped back arrow button though. Apart from the trimmed header, IE9 comes with Tracking Protection, a new and unique feature that lets the user have more control over the browser compared t competition.
Setup:
IE9 comes with support for multiple languages like English, Chinese traditional and simplified, French, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, and German with plans for extending support to other languages as well. However, it only runs on Windows Vista and Windows 7; earlier versions of Windows are not supported. The installers for both OS’s and 32/64 bit architecture are different.
An improvement over IE8 is that the annoying wizard for choosing search suggestions etc. no longer bothers users when setting up IE9 so it’s ready to browse after being installed.
Interface:
As mentioned earlier, the new window allows more of the webpage contents to be displayed compared to competition. The controls are confined to a single bar as the address and search boxes are merged into one. If you don’t prefer the new header, you can enable IE’s menus and toolbars, by right-clicking on the top window border.
Tabs:
Now you can drag tabs out of and back into your browser window to create new windows just like in other browsers. Microsoft did however add some flair. The browser can continue to play a video while you drag it while making a new window. In addition, when a tab is dragged to either edge of the screen in Windows 7, the new browser window created fills exactly half of the screen that is it adheres to Aero Snap which Windows 7 users will be familiar with. Other browsers don’t have this functionality.
If you have too many tabs then you can also place them in their own row. The focus on currently used tab is brighter to make it stand out. Tabs can also be closed without switching to them like in other browsers but this was a feature missing from earlier versions of IE. IE9 fits everything into one row so the window size has to be large enough or tabs can go out of the displayed screen but they are easily accessed through arrows which appear on either side of the tab bar.
The new tab page now shows the most frequented webpages but that can be disabled if you’re the secretive sort. It also allows reopening of closed tabs or the entire recent session as well as enabling private browsing. There’s a “Discover other sites you might like" icon there too and a link at the bottom which allows use of the Suggested sites feature.

Pinned Sites
IE9 aims to give the site you’re visiting center of the stage. And the pinned-site feature is introduced to back that statement up. To create a pinned site, all you have to do is drag a webpage’s icon down towards the Windows 7 taskbar. Thus, a site is given the same treatment as an application. Some of you might be thinking of Google’s ‘every app as a Web app’ idea and its web application shortcuts but IE9 does it better because of its OS integration which includes Windows 7 jumplists for websites that supply the necessary XML data in their code.
In addition to taskbar icons, pinned site’s favicon is used instead of the browser logos place which is in the upper left corner of the window with the back and forward buttons taking on the color of the site icon as well. These are automatically grabbed by IE9 for all pinned sites to display in the window border.
The icon retains itself even when a different domain is reached which is a bit strange. For pinned sites, the Home button disappears from the menu bar which pretty much covers the difference.
IE9 allows addition of multiple sites to a pinned-site icon, a recent development. To do that you have to choose “Add as a home page” after you right-click the site icon in a new tab. This provides an easy way to open a set of frequently visited sites.
The best thing for Windows 7 users is the pinned site feature in IE9. It opens up all kinds of possibilities like site owners promoting their sites for pinned treatment and offering buttons on their pages that pin a site automatically. Microsoft should be lauded for giving sites full control of app even though Chrome’s application shortcuts have the upper hand since they give the whole window to the site.
The One Box
IE9 puts addresses and search in a single text box which is named the One Box. When you enter a search query and get your result page, the One box doesn’t automatically change to a URL of the result page instead, the original search terms remain there, a pretty handy feature if you typed a really lengthy search query.
