Four times faster than current microSD cards
Samsung's boffins have been busy super-charging microSD, and have come up with a new Ultra High Speed-1 (UHS-1) model.
The super speedy microSD card comes in a 16GB format and is produced using 20 nanometre 64Gb toggle DDR 2.0 NAND, along with an advanced Samsung controller which supports the UHS-1 interface.
The company's own tests indicate that the UHS-1 card can achieve a maximum sequential read speed of 80 megabytes per second. Contemporary microSD speeds are 21 megabytes per second in comparison, so Samsung's new technology effectively quadruples that.
The cards won't work with every mobile device, of course, as many don't support microSD - including Samsung's Galaxy tablet. Samsung is pitching the tech towards LTE smartphones.
Wanhoon Hong, executive vice president, memory sales & marketing, Samsung Electronics, noted: "MicroSD cards with a UHS-1 interface offer users an extremely high level of performance on their LTE smartphones and for other advanced mobile applications. This allows consumers to enjoy high-quality images and video playback directly from the memory cards, which fully support the advanced performance features of diverse digital gadgets."
The company began initial production of the 16GB UHS-1 microSD cards in the last couple of weeks, so they should be available fairly soon. Samsung also plans higher density solutions in the range, so we expect a 32GB model will be available before long.
