6 Things I Do To Be Consistently Happy: ProPakistanis

Now that it’s almost two years since I first had the idea for Buffer, and with the year and a half before that which I worked on my previous startup, I’ve started to notice a few patterns amongst the ups and downs that come with building a startup.
One of the most important things I’ve learned during this time is that I perform the best when I’m happy. It really does change everything. If I’m happy then I’m more productive when hacking code, I’m better at answering support, and I find it easier to stay focused.
I’ve found that there are a few key habits which, for me, act as great rituals for enabling me to be consistently happy. They also act as anchor activities to bring my happiness level back up quickly whenever I have a period where I’m not feeling 100%. So here are 6 of the things I do:

1. Wake up early

One of the things I love about running my own startup is that I have complete freedom to experiment with my daily routine.
Through experimentation, I’ve found that waking up early every day makes me feel most invigorated and happy. It gives me a great start to the day, and this almost always leads to a great rest of the day. Over time, I’ve found I crave that “early morning” feeling, a time I can do some great work and be super focused.Gretchen Rubin from The Happiness Project mentioned something similar arecent article:
“I get up at 6:00 a.m. every day, even on weekends and vacation, because I love it.”
Waking up early every day requires discipline, especially about what time I sleep. Right now, I have a sleep ritual of disengaging from the day at 9:30pm and sleeping at 10pm. I now love all aspects of this ritual and with it in place I awake at 6am feeling fresh.

2. Exercise daily

“We found that people who are more physically active have more pleasant-activated feelings than people who are less active” - Amanda Hyde
In the last three years, I’ve gone from dabbling with exercise to it becoming something I do every weekday without fail. At first I had no idea what to do at the gym, so I asked my brother, who’s a personal trainer. I then went a few times with a good friend and soon I was hooked.
Over time, I developed this into a daily ritual so strong that I feel a pull towards it, and by doing it consistently I feel fantastic and can more easily take on other challenges. I recently discovered that exercise is a keystone habit which paves the way for growth in all other areas. I’ve also found that it helps me to get high quality sleep each night.

3. Have a habit of disengagement

“The richest, happiest and most productive lives are characterized by the ability to fully engage in the challenge at hand, but also to disengage periodically and seek renewal” - Loehr and Schwarz, The Power of Full Engagement
As I mentioned earlier, a key way I am able to wake up at 6am is through my ritual of disengaging in the evening. I go for a walk at 9:30pm, along a route which I’ve done many times before. Since the route is already decided and is the same every time, I am simply walking and doing nothing else. This prompts reflection and relaxation.
Various thoughts enter and leave my mind during the walk, and I’ve found this to be very healthy. Sometimes I think about the great things I enjoyed that day. Other times I will realise a change I should make in order to be happier day to day. I also feel calm and relaxed by the time I return from my walk, and I can therefore go straight to bed and fall asleep sooner than if I been engaged in my work and had closed my laptop only a few minutes earlier.

4. Regularly help others

One of my most fascinating discoveries about myself so far this year, is how happy it makes me to help others. For some time I had been consistently meeting founders to help them with their startups without realising that it was making me so happy. Then when I read Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life’s Most Important Skill by Matthieu Ricard I connected the dots of when I was happy and the activity I was doing: helping others.
I read Ricard’s section on the link between altruism and happiness and everything clicked. Since then, I’ve been consistently helping many startup founders and it’s brought me much happiness through both the challenge of finding ways to help each person, and the feeling that comes when I help the other person discover ways to make faster progress with their current challenges.
If you’d like to get startup advice via email or Skype, get in touch.

5. Learn new skills

“Being in the moment, focusing completely on a single task, and finding a sense of calm and happiness in your work. Flow is exactly that.” - Leo Babauta
One thing I’ve found during my time working on Buffer, is that a key reason I’ve been happy for most of that time is that I’ve consistently had new challenges to take on. It may seem odd that new challenges can equate to happiness, but it is the times when I’ve slipped into a few weeks of working on something I already know well, that have led me to feel less happy than I want to be.
I think a key part of why learning new skills can bring happiness, is that you need to concentrate in order to make progress. The “flow” state has been found to trigger happiness. In addition, when learning something new you are able to learn a lot in a short space of time due to a steep learning curve. For example, in the last two weeks I’ve started learning Android development from scratch and I’ve personally found incredible the amount I know now compared to nothing two weeks ago.

6. Have multiple ways to “win” each day

Since the above activities are habitual, many days of the week I actually accomplish all of them. If I succeed with all five, I have a truly amazing day and feel fantastic. I have goals for Buffer, and I have goals in my weights routine too. In addition, I try to schedule one or two meetings or Skype calls to help people each day. I do this based on learning from around a year ago through an interview Tim Ferriss had with Matt from 37signals. I’ve mentioned it beforeon my blog, but it’s so good that I want to repeat it:
“If your entire ego and identity is vested in your startup, where there are certainly factors outside of your control, you can get into a depressive funk that affects your ability to function. So, you should also, let’s say, join a rock climbing gym. Try to improve your time in the mile. Something like that. I recommend at least one physical activity. Then even if everything goes south — you have some horrible divorce agreement with your co-founder — if you had a good week and set a personal record in the gym or on the track or wherever, that can still be a good week.”
So if I start my morning with a gym routine, work on Buffer during the day and help two people during lunch, I have 4 chances to have a great day. It almost always works.
Are there any key activities or habits you’ve found bring you happiness? I’d love to hear from you.

Mobile Networks to Remain Blocked in Selected Cities for Security Reasons: ProPakistanis

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, on orders of Interior Ministry, has directed all mobile phone operators to remain prepared to shut down cellular services in selected parts of country during Chand Raat for security reasons.
————————————–
Update
We have received confirmation from cellular companies that they are asked by regulator to block cellular services in following four cities:
  • Karachi
  • Lahore
  • Multan
  • Quetta
Order said that service in four upmentioned cities will remain blocked from 8 PM today (i.e. August 19th 2012) to 11 AM tomorrow morning (i.e. August 20th, 2012).
PTA said it could a list of more cities where service is supposed to remain blocked during this time.
Cellular operators are complying with the orders.
—————————————–
An enforcement letter from PTA issued earlier today said that mobile phone operators should remain prepared for immediately shutting down the cellular services in selected urban cities, including provincial capitals, from evening 19th August to morning of August 20th, 2012.
PTA said that names of areas/cities will be communicated to cellular operators later, when and if required.
Mr. Rehman Malik, Head of Interior Ministry, has also explained that mobile phone networks are likely to remain blocked in selected parts of country, amid security threats. However, he said, service will remain down for not more than few hours only.
Following is the letter sent out to all cellular operators:
Dear All.
In order to help Law Enforcement Agencies to improve the security situation and to avoid any untoward incident in different parts of the country including provincial capitals, mobile services will be required to be closed from evening 19th August, 2012 to morning 20th August, 2012.
Therefore, all mobile operators are requested to be ready as the area names will be  communicated at a very short notice, please..
Regards,
Muhammad Ali,Deputy Director (Enforcement),
Enforcement Division, PTA HQ,F-5/1, Islamabad.
It merits mentioning here that cellular networks remain over capacity during Chaand Raatand might give a feeling that services are blocked. You can easily determine the service status by noticing the signals available over your phone. Just in case, cellular signal bars will disappear in case of service shut down.
It is advised to use landline telephone services for any urgent needs during possible cellular shut down.

Eid Mubarak: The real Joy! ProPakistanis

The Prophet of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said;
“On the day of eid (when people gather to offer eid prayers)
Allah says to the Angels,
‘Have these people fulfilled the obligation (of fasting)
and are now gathered for prayers?
I swear by My pride,
magnificence, majesty,
mercy and
elevated status
that I will fulfill their prayers.
Tell them to return,
I have forgiven them all
and furthermore
I have replaced their sins with virtuous deeds.’
Hence they return completely forgiven.”

New Android Keyboards To Auto-Complete Your Words: ProPakistanis

Washington, August 18 (ANI): Two android developers have been working on a latest app that can scan your social-media, text-messaging and Gmail output to get a better sense of how you write.
SwiftKey 3, a 3.99 dollar release in tablet and phone versions goes farther down that road. If you grant it permission, it will scan your Facebook and Twitter identities, read your Gmail, subscribe to your blog's RSS feed and look over your outgoing text messages to learn your style.
This personalization has allowed SwiftKey to auto-complete words way too esoteric for the standard Android keyboard, Discovery News reported.
However, its habit of automatically adding a space after a comma saves too little effort for the confusion it causes, and typing abbreviations with periods like "L.A." is borderline impossible unless you add in that punctuation later on.
The other app Swype has already won fans for this clever shortcut - you trace a path over the letters you want to type, allowing for exceedingly fast input of even long words.
But that approach breaks down if Swype's dictionary lacks the word you desired.
The current beta aims to fix that with Swype Connect. With permission, it scans the names of your Facebook friends, your Twitter updates and the handles of people you follow there, your Gmail and your outgoing texts.
It won't learn as much about you as Swype SwiftKey, but it also requires less faith in its Seattle-based developers.
Unfortunately, it has its own auto-correct annoyances - automatically inserting a space after a Twitter username means you can't append a comma or an apostrophe without moving the cursor back by hand.
Since Swype only sells its software to phone vendors, the general public is limited to downloading a beta version that will expire in about six months.
This perpetual-beta approach can inflict mistakes that shouldn't make it to "finished" software like an earlier beta flipped from English to Spanish with one tap.
Both of these apps demand regular re-training, or the snapshots they took of your Twitter or Facebook activity will grow stale. And since Google's browser software seems to handle text slightly different from other apps, you lose some of their auto-correction there. (ANI)

Nokia’s Windows Phone 8 Smartphones are Coming on Nokia World, Sept. 5th: ProPakistanis

Nokia World has always been one of the most anticipated Nokia events that are held every year. Nokia World 2011 saw the announcement of the first ‘real’ Windows Phones, the Lumia 900 and 710.
Just as exciting was the Nokia World 2010 where Nokia announced the first Symbian^3 devices including the 12 megapixel cameraphone, the N8 and a bunch of other Symbian phones as well.
This year, Bloomberg has revealed that Nokia will be launching Windows Phone 8smartphones. This will be the second consecutive time that the event will see the launching of Windows Phones.
The event will be held on September 5-6 in Helsinki, Finland. The phones are expected to launch in October (around the time of launching of Windows 8 and Surface) or later.
The event is very important for for the Finland-based company because it will bring out the best of Windows Phones and will put Nokia in a place from where it will finally be able to compete with the big brands in this competition.

Ufone and Plan Intl. Join hands to Conduct Pre Floods Awareness Drive: ProPakistanis

In wake of the possible floods, Ufone has announced an early flood warning service which is a part of a comprehensive flood awareness campaign that was launched  in collaboration with Plan International Pakistan.
Ufone is also supporting Plan’s ongoing early warning systems by disseminating information to communities at risk and responsible organization including local governments. These awareness drives will be compatible with preparedness initiatives once the response is officially triggered in the backdrop of heavy rains.
The campaign contains messages on health and hygiene, child protection, evacuations to safe places and linkages with key stakeholders like district government functionaries, humanitarian organizations, local philanthropists’ etc.
It may be recalled here that during the floods of 2010 and 2011 Ufone provided relief items and survival kits to the flood victims in abundance. This time around, by launching the early flood warning service, the company will venture into a first of its kind awareness drive that will help save millions of lives.
Expressing his views, Abdul Aziz- President & CEO of Ufone said, “As a socially responsible organization Ufone worked hand in hand with government and non-government authorities in 2010 and 2011 in the aftermath of torrential rains and this time around,” he said, “we have proactively engaged our resources for dissemination of flood awareness messages”. He hoped the awareness drive launched by Ufone will bridge the information gap government departments and the flood victims by raising their awareness and saving precious lives.
Established in 1937, Plan International is a development organization, working for lasting improvements in children’s lives especially in developing countries, through a process that unites people across cultures and adds meaning to their lives. Plan is currently supporting and strengthening disaster preparedness in 7 most vulnerable districts of Pakistan located in South Punjab and Northern & Southern Sindh.
Rashid Javed- Country Director Plan International-Pakistan said “We look forward to joining hands with Ufone in order to respond to the needs of children and communities affected in natural disasters especially in flood prone areas. With this collaboration timely and effective assistance can be provided to affectees with distribution of food and non-food items, based on immediate needs in Southern Punjab and Sindh. The relationship will foster a broader collaboration between Ufone and Plan to help building communities that are resilient to disaster and emergency situations while using the specific skill both partners bring to be able to harmonize Disaster Risk Reduction with use of outreach and technology.  A mass media campaign will be designed to raise awareness of amongst flood prone communities on risk mitigation, early warning mechanisms and accessing timely flood related information.  Realizing that disaster preparedness is a needed investment to mitigate risk and vulnerability of children, youth and communities, both organizations will cement efforts in this regard and also look at strategic stock piling of relief items which could be distributed within hours after an emergency and engaging communities on flood risk reduction measures”

How Can Linkedin Be Used To Enhance Your Venture: ProPakistanis

It doesn’t matter what your venture is. Be it a team of people working on a start-up, an individual employee looking for a better post, someone looking to raise capital and investors, or a freelance artist. Whoever you are, you would do well to get onto Linkedin and connect with people who share similar interests. Especially if you’re looking to enhance your business venture, there are three important ways you can use Linkedin in an efficient manner.
1. Preparation: Preparation includes not just finishing your background work, it implies complete knowledge about your subject matter. You should be up to date with what’s going on in your field, and on Linkedin you should join various groups, discussions and forums (Think Linkedin Answers, which allows you to answer questions and ask them).
But even before all this, you need to understand the technicalities of your own venture. Get your business plan vetted by a professional agency, and in fact, you can use Linkedin to find even such agencies or individuals. When you’re trying to enhance your venture, you should get in touch with website makers, accountants, people who can explain financials to you, people willing to give you feedback on your pitch.
2. Using the tools of Linkedin: Increase your visibility. Complete your profile. Connect to people all around – you never know who has what connections. Be humble, be nice. Do not put only your present company into your profile, mention everything you have ever worked on. This will give potentially interested people a background into how you have achieved the skills to come to the stage you’re in.
Improve your Google Page Rank, and leave your website and blog name on all forums as part of your signature. Ask for references, give references and generally make yourself active. Don’t presume it to be short-term and to achieve enhancement for business, think long-term. You are doing this to be connected with people who will continue to be useful to you all your career.
3. Track others who are looking for what you are: You are not the only one in your field who is trying to move your business forward. At any given point, there are at least hundreds just like you. It is a good idea to get in touch with them and exchange notes on what occurs. The idea is not to be competitive but to learn. Common tips help everyone and you will benefit from each others’ mistakes. You will also be able to learn which strategies work and which strategies are pointless. Remember, this is a two-way communication. If you’re hoping to get information, you must be willing to give some out. No one likes a self centered businessman. Advice is free. It won’t cost you.

Lenovo Reveals Information of its First Windows 8 Tablet: ProPakistanis

If you thought only Microsoft was making a Windows 8 tablet, you were wrong. Lenovo and other companies are already in this race. Lenovo announced its first Windows 8 tablet, the Thinkpad Tablet 2 way back in June but its only now that they’ve revealed the complete features and the release date.
The specs of the Thinkpad Tablet 2 make it one of the most feature-rich tablets available right now. Here are the key specifications:
  • 10.1 inch capacitive, multitouch touchscreen
  • IPS Display with a resolution of 1366 x 768
  • Optional 3G and 4G connectivity
  • Thickness: 9.8 mm
  • Intel Atom processor
  • 8 megapixel rear-facing camera
  • 2 megapixel front-facing camera
  • Fingerprint scanner
  • A stylus with a slot at the back of the tablet
  • MicroHDMI output/ NFC/ Ethernet Jack
  • Full size USB port
  • 10 hour battery life
  • Support for multiple users
Lenovo hasn’t announced the price for the Thinkpad Tablet 2 yet. Our only gripe with this tablet currently is its name. The original Thinkpad Tablet was an Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet so a new name would’ve been appreciated but still its not much of an issue.
The Thinkpad Tablet 2 will be launched in October. Since both Microsoft Surface and Windows 8 will launch on October 26, you should expect the Thinkpad Tablet 2 to launch on the same date or later that month.

Samsung Pakistan: This is How a Poor Facebook Admin can Embarrass Your Brand: ProPakistanis

We have seen blunders happening on official Facebook pages of multinational brands before (so often for Pakistani brands), when relatively inadequate Facebook page admins post updates/pictures without researching, or let me say by heavily relying on Google.
History repeated itself yesterday, when Samsung Pakistan uploaded an image on its official Facebook page with caption: “Picture perfect view made even more perfect with Samsung Galaxy S3”
Check below the screenshot:
Soon after the upload, comments started to come-in, with shouts that its not Galaxy S3, rather it appears more like a cousin of Galaxy Note. Complying with the commentators (apparently without researching), the page admin edited the caption and changed Title to “Galaxy Note”.
This was when someone tipped to Engadget that Samsung Pakistan has mistakenly uploaded the image of upcoming Galaxy Note 2.
Following is what Engadget wrote:
There’s one big reason to be skeptical, which is that this exact same pic already did the rounds as a potential GS III image before that flagship was launched. The only difference here is that it’s on an official outlet, which implies the jpeg in question could be sitting on a member of staff’s hard drive.
Story was naturally picked by the whole internet. The Verge was, however, able to settled the confusion by identifying that this was a concept design for Samsung Galaxy S3 posted on a Russian website.
Even worse, Samsung Pakistan updated following status, revealing that the mistake was on part of poor Googling – yes official page of Samsung Pakistan uses the mighty Google for its images. Check below yourself:

Acer Reveals the Touchscreen Windows 8 Ultrabook, the Aspire S7: ProPakistanis

It seems that companies are becoming more and more active in rolling out their Windows 8 products in the past couple of months and Acer is one of them.
They announced their Acer Aspire S7 ultrabook a month ago but its only now that they have unveiled the specs of this thing.
To start of, this ultrabook has an (optional) touchscreen, comes in 11.6 and 13.3 inch versions and runs on Windows 7 which will be upgraded to Windows 8. Since it will launch in the second half of September, Acer won’t be able to put Windows 8 in this ultrabook.
Here are the specs:
  • 11.6 or 13.3 inch versions with full HD displays
  • Thickness: 12.5 mm
  • Aluminium unibody (with a glass lid on the outside of the 13 inch flavor)
  • Screen moveable by 180 degrees
  • Backlit keyboard and a trackpad with no physical buttons
  • Windows 7 running but might be upgraded by Acer themselves
  • Intel Core (Ivy Bridge) i5 processors(you can have core i7 for some more money)
  • 4 Gb RAM coupled with 128GB of SSD storage
  • micro HDMI port/ Thunderbolt port/ headphone jack
  • 2 USB 3.0 ports and a full size SD card slot
  • Acer’s new Twin Air cooling system for keeping the ultrabook cool
  • 9 & 12 hrs battery life for the 11 & 13 inch models respectively
  • Option for more RAM, SSD storage and touchscreen
Other than having a touchscreen (which is very rare for an ultrabook), Acer Aspire S7 has an exceptional design which puts it in the same class as the Macbooks from Apple (design-wise). The ultrabook will retail for $1465 or around Rs. 160,000 or more when it launch in September.

Ufone Exhorts Regaining National Glory: ProPakistanis

How good were those days when August 14th celebrations, with spirit for decorating our homes and streets and more, were easily the best in the year.
How splendor the feelings were then and so was the festivity throughout August.
August 14th meant high raising flags, green and white dresses, playing national songs (in high-volume), visiting monuments and places of national significance, meeting relatives, exchanging gifts, visiting recreational spots and what not. In-availability of public transport and traffic jams used to be other highlights of Independence day.
Not that it is all lost now, but those who have remained kids during 80’s, 90’s or before can count the difference in looks of the August celebrations.
This is exactly what is highlighted by Ufone in its recent TVC, specifically attributed for August 14th celebrations. Ufone has tried to link the spirits we had then for our national celebrations with current times and how this lack of enthusiasm during August has impacted our national performance. Ufone has ignited the right channel to put many hearts back on track.
Ufone has rightly pinched the need for Going Green, the need for keeping our flags strong and high for a badly needed comeback. Indeed this is the time when we need to recollect ourselves – to get our focus back to prosperity, triumph and to raise national integrity. Like Wasim Akram said in the ad:
Aaj Agar hum jhanda lehrana shuru karein gain to Shayyad hum dobarra gaarna bhi shuru kar dain gain.

Your Phone Camera has Probably Got More Pixels than NASA’s Curiosity Rover: ProPakistanis

If your phone has got a camera of more than 2 megapixels, then your phone camera is better than the cameras of the $2.5 billion Curiosity rover of NASA which recently landed on planet Mars days ago. Why? During a recent interview, the camera project manager of Curiosity, Mike Ravine said:
“These designs were proposed in 2004, and you don’t get to propose one specification and then go off and develop something else. 2MP with 8GB of flash [memory] didn’t sound too bad in 2004. But it doesn’t compare well to what you get in an iPhone today.”
And Mike is right. Cameras in phones weren’t very good then and took blurry images so a 2mp camera with 8Gb flash memory would’ve sounded great then. Furthermore, it was kept 2 megapixel (and not more) to make efficient use of bandwidth required to transmit images. Budget also played its role for the NASA to keep this camera at 2 MP.
Just in case if you are wondering, Curiosity Rover uses UHF transmitter for sending data to two spacecraft orbiting Mars, which relay the data back to earth at not more than 10 MB per hour. Understandably, this 10 MB per hour data is shared by various instruments including the 2 MP camera.
Compare that to today and even dumb-phones come with at least 3 megapixel cameras.
Smartphones with 8 megapixel cameras are considered flagships and anything less than 5 megapixels is unacceptable. We’ve even got a 41 megapixel smartphone, the 808 Pureview from Nokia. But really, those were the days.

Ufone to Give Away Free Minutes to Entire Customer Base on August 14th: ProPakistanis

ProPakistanis has reliably learned that Ufone has plans to gift its customers on August 14th this year, by crediting free minutes to its entire base of customers of over 24 million Ufone users.
Free giveaway of minutes to all its customers is also evident from below screen taken from Ufone’s Independence Day TVC.
We aren’t cent percent sure yet, but it is likely that Ufone will give away 14 free minutes to all of its customers – across the board – who will have to consume these free minutes the same day, i.e. August 14th. More, exact and official details are yet to come.
The extraordinary Independence day gift coupled with thought provoking TVC demonstrates Ufone’s commitment to the people of Pakistan and the fact that issue of governance do not reflect the innate talent of Pakistanis.
Ufone, this way, will give away some 336 million free minutes on its network, a hefty and daring gift that anyone could give away on Pakistan’s independence day. This is probably the only instance in the history of country that a telecom operator is giving away free credit to all its customer base.
We will recommend Ufone customers to avail these free minutes for wishing Independence Day to your friends and family and make this August memorable. How wonderful an experience and tradition it can evolve into. Ufone has germinated an idea, lets explore it further.
